Joshua Hales, Director of Music
Josh is responsible for the music at St Anne’s Church, Kew, directing the church choir and the monthly choral evensong sung by professional singers, as well as playing the organ.
After holding organ scholarships at Truro and Salisbury cathedrals and Exeter College, Oxford, Josh spent four years as Assistant Director of Music at Sheffield Cathedral, with fifteen months as Acting Director of Music. During this time he appeared as organist or director for live broadcasts of evensong for BBC Radio 3 and on Radio 4’s Daily Service, played the organ for a Royal Maundy service in the presence of HM Queen Elizabeth II, was the organist for episodes of BBC Songs of Praise, and was an organ tutor at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester.
Josh has given organ performances in numerous cathedrals, churches and chapels, including Westminster Abbey; St Paul’s Cathedral; St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle; St John’s College, Cambridge; St John the Divine Cathedral and Trinity Church Wall Street, New York; La Madeleine, Paris; and the Katharinen kirche, Hamburg. He has performed as an organist and harpsichordist with a variety of baroque ensembles, and given several world-premiere performances. He is a prize-winning Associate of the Royal College of Organists.
